{"id":1275,"date":"2021-02-27T14:48:53","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T19:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/?p=1275"},"modified":"2021-02-27T21:29:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T02:29:18","slug":"life-on-the-second-life-book-club-2242021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/life-on-the-second-life-book-club-2242021\/","title":{"rendered":"Life on the Second Life Book Club, 2\/24\/2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/secondlifebc.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1205 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/secondlifebc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/secondlifebc.png 500w, http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/secondlifebc-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So late last year, my publisher\u2019s publicist (heh, that\u2019s fun to say) contacted me with a very interesting offer: I\u2019d been invited along with two other Parliament House authors to appear on the Second Life Book Club in February.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/secondlife.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Second Life<\/a>, a huge online virtual world,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>but had never tried it myself. I knew nothing of the book club, but after looking at the videos that host Bernhard Drax (aka Draxtor Despres) sent us, I knew this was going to be a good time, and probably unlike any other appearance I\u2019ll ever make as a writer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0The book club has only been running since April 2020 but in that time Drax has hosted some really big names: Larry Niven, Matt Ruff, Cory Doctorow, and LL McKinney, for example.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In December, Drax hosted an onboarding session where he walked me through the set and the controls. Because we\u2019d be appearing as avatars, he asked me to send him ideas for how I wanted my avatar to look. I decided I wanted to resemble Ada Oliver, the antagonist of <i>Tidepool<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/slbcadaoliveravatar.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1276\" src=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/slbcadaoliveravatar-288x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/slbcadaoliveravatar-288x300.png 288w, http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/slbcadaoliveravatar.png 759w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who am I kidding? I\u2019d dress like that\u00a0all the time if I could get away with it and afford all that vintage goodness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I attended the SLBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=luG_-p0IuMk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Year End Hang Out<\/a>\u00a0and was surprised when Drax called on me to talk to everyone a little about myself and my writing. But it was a great group of people, and I felt pretty confident about February.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the day of the Parliament House panel, I appeared with E.M. SLers created a female rock girlfriend in the audience for him. Hee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You probably can\u2019t see it (I didn\u2019t until Bill sent me screenshots), but those green statues on the table were little Cthulhus. I\u2019m pretty sure they were there as a nod to <i>Tidepool<\/i>. It was just there for the ambiance. I think it\u2019s amazing these people go to so much trouble to celebrate the authors they invite, even an unknown debut author like me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And here I am reading another excerpt from Tidepool. But let it be known: Ada Oliver would absolutely NOT sit\u00a0like that. For shame! She\u2019s got one of those ramrod iron backbones going on. I, however, would totally sit like that. And do.<\/p>\n<p>I had a great time and really enjoyed hearing more about E.M. Wright and Sean Gibson&#8217;s books; I&#8217;ve posted\u00a0with them and other PH authors on Twitter and Facebook, but this is the first time I&#8217;ve really chatted with another PH author\u00a0&#8220;in person&#8221;-ish. And the book club itself was wonderful. People asked very good questions and seemed genuinely interested in our work.<\/p>\n<p>That brings me to something that&#8217;s really stood out to me this year as I&#8217;ve started doing panels as an author. Every time I&#8217;m invited to something like this, my Impostor Syndrome\u00a0pipes up: <em>But you guys know I&#8217;m a nobody, right? My book isn&#8217;t even out yet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But no one\u00a0has treated me like that, at all. Not on <a href=\"http:\/\/nicolewillson.com\/blog\/females-of-fright-panel-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the HWA panel<\/a>, and not at the Second Life Book Club either. Drax got a print ARC of <em>Tidepool<\/em> (which I&#8217;m jealous as hell of; I have yet to see <em>Tidepool<\/em> in print) and had lots of lovely things to say about it.
